YELLOW FEVER FAQs

-+ What is yellow fever?

Yellow fever is a viral disease that is transmitted primarily by mosquitoes. It is called 'yellow fever' because in serious cases, the skin turns yellow in colour. This is known as 'jaundice'.

-+ Who can have a yellow fever vaccination?

The yellow fever vaccine is recommended for:

  • Persons who are nine months of age or older travelling or living in any country in West Africa, regardless of where they will be in that country; and
  • Persons who are nine months of age or older travelling or living outside the urban areas of all other yellow fever endemic countries.

Travellers should seek medical advice on vaccination for their individual medical circumstances, particularly about the suitability of yellow fever vaccine for infants, pregnant women and those who are immuno-compromised.

-+ What are the side effects of the vaccine?

Yellow fever vaccine may cause a slight fever, headache, tiredness, and muscle aches in 2-10% of persons, starting 3-9 days after vaccination.

-+ What is a yellow fever vaccination certificate?

Yellow Fever is a disease that is subject to the World Health Organisation's (WHO) International Health Regulations (IHR). On 15 December 2007 new requirements outlined by the WHO came into force and clinics in Australia are now required to use the "International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis" and an Australian Government Approved stamp which includes a registration number unique to the clinic that administers the vaccination.

Many countries, including Australia, require a valid international certificate of vaccination from travellers, including those in transit, arriving from infected areas or from countries with infected areas.

-+ Do I need the yellow fever vaccine?

If contracted, the consequences of yellow fever can be serious and may even result in death. Therefore it is strongly recommended that all travellers be vaccinated for yellow fever if travelling to or from a yellow fever declared country.

Yellow fever is a quarantinable disease in Australia. People who are one year of age or older must hold an international vaccination certificate if, within six days before arriving in Australia, they have stayed overnight or longer in a yellow fever declared country.

-+ Where can I get the yellow fever vaccine?

Yellow fever vaccinations must be provided by an approved yellow fever vaccination clinic such as The Travel Doctor - TMVC. We will provide a vaccination certificate in the form approved and required by WHO. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is valid for 10 years and begins 10 days after vaccination.
